When a discontinued calibration device left a cancer care facility exposed, PolyUnity designed a 3D printed device to align the ISO-center of linear accelerators — the facility replaced all eight calibration devices.

Challenge

A cancer care facility with eight linear accelerator machines faced challenges when two calibration devices were accidentally dropped & broken in two weeks. The device was suddenly discontinued from the Canadian market, and the newer alternative would require a different workflow, rendering it undesirable.

Solution

PolyUnity designed a mechanical device to align the ISO-center of the linear accelerator, ensuring precise aiming of the beam on the targeted area. The enhanced design combines innovative features, material considerations, and user centred feedback to address existing challenges.

Impact

The facility replaced all eight calibration devices to minimize the risk of breakage. This expands the scope of use of the device to more rigorous procedures such as radiology and imaging. Procurement costs decreased and workflows remained intact.
